Parenting The Teens - Some Needed Tips
>> Friday, April 13, 2012

The most important ingredient to developing a good parent teen relationship is to spend quality time with your child. If you are too busy during the day, make sure to have a family dinner together. Take interest in their high school curriculum, the sport events, debates, fests, friends etc. so that your teen feels that you care about his/her personal issues. Discuss your thoughts, share jokes, and encourage your teen to do the same.
When discussing problems, try not to be too preachy with your troubled teen - they hate lectures even if it’s for their own good. And yes, never yell or shout at them as it would hurt their ego and worsen the situation further. Be stern yet comforting so that they feel relaxed to disclose their issues with you. Try to understand them from their point of view.
Lastly, part of parenting teens is the responsibility to make your teen aware of his/her duties towards family and life in general. Give plenty of praise when your teen deserves it; be friendly to your teen and his/her friends without compromising your authority as parent.
